So I was in Fables yesterday and I did something I more or less promised myself I would never do-- I ordered Chicken Noodle soup. Don't get me wrong, I really like chicken noodle soup. But my philosophy is that I can get chicken noodle soup anywhere, so why would I waste an opportunity to have something new and different when I visit Fables, especially since they always have at least three options on the menu. Following that logic, I should have ordered the Curried Tomato, which I've never had before. But it was a cold, snowy day and I guess I just wanted something "comfortable;" and besides, given how well they do everything else, the chicken noodle was likely to be awesome. Well, I wouldn't go quite that far. It was pretty good, lush with carrots, celery and onions, but a little light on the chicken (possibly the luck of the ladle). The real surprise was that there wasn't anything I would consider a noodle in sight. There was some little tiny pellet-like pieces of pasta, but aren't noodles supposed to be kind of long, flat and narrow? That's not a complaint-- it's just exactly the type of creativity I value in the Fables chefs. But it wasn't exactly the comfort food I craved on that particular day, so a mild disappointment. I'm planning one last trip to Fables before heading back out west, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for something really special to provide a memory to last me through the rest of the winter.
