I am a history professor who grew up in Western New York, but now find myself teaching in Western Montana. My primary areas of interest and research are in American cultural history, especially in relation to the intersection of popular culture and politics. This blog is primarily to help me keep in touch with my far-flung family and friends, and give me the chance to spout off a bit on whatever happens to be on my mind.
Dr. John's Record Shelf is my weekly radio program on KDWG, 90.9 FM broadcast from the University of Montana Western. My goal is to offer an eclectic mix of various styles, genres and eras, focusing primarily (but not exclusively) on music that you won't hear anywhere else on the dial (at least not in SW Montana). My co-host, Art Vandelay and I (with the assistance of station flunky Rico Muckman) also provide some additional bits to liven up the show, including Three People I Know (where I mention three people I know), The Cultural Corner (where we engage in lively banter on art, literature and poetry), Dr. John's Top Five (where we take a shot at ranking almost anything), and Record Shelf Theater (where we re-create a scene from some famous movie, play or TV show). If you find yourself in Dillon, tune us in; otherwise, below are some lists of songs that have been aired on recent shows:

This is for my sisters out in Washington. Though the picture is a few months old, and Emma no doubt looks very different now, it's the only one of about twenty I shot on this particular afternoon that turned out. So--- worthy of a post.
Dr John, Oh such a cutie, but I guess that is a given what with Hajduk blood in them =) Well I can follow your arguments - most of what I posted is stuff I hear and wonder about. I know if someone leans more liberal they will quote from the liberal philosophies. That can also apply to the conservative philosophies. I believe the most of what the candidates sprout off is just so they can be elected. These "policies" must all go through congress before becoming the actual laws. In some ways the congress elections could be more important as they (if a more democratic lean) can push forward or (if republican lean) reject the presidental "policies" put forth by the Obama candidate (or alternatively McCain candidate). They both scare the living bejeebies out of me and I am so confused - I am actually looking at Ralph Nadar, or the Libertarian, or even the Constitutional candidate - Granted not much belief they can be elected but I think I may just sleep easier knowing I didn't vote for one of the two typical candidates. Question- the Mayan calandar suggests that the world will come to an end on 2012 - do you think that has any bearing on who gets elected??? just a random thought =) Take care of yourself Lil' Sis

Dr. John,
I think this is the first picture I've seen of my littlest cousin. She is certainly the cute one :) Figured I'd drop a line saying hello.
