James Agee (1909-1955) was a poet, novelist, screenwriter and journalist. Back in the 1930s he collaborated with photographer Walker Evans on one of the most unique books ever published in this country:
Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, a documentary in prose and pictures of a sharecropping family in Alabama. This quote comes from that book:
"In every child who is born under no matter what circumstances and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of the human race is born again, and in him, too, once more, and each of us, our terrific responsibility toward human life: toward the utmost idea of goodness, of the horror of terrorism, and of God."
