Here's a great insight from the French intellectual Denis Diderot (1713-1784), one of the key figures of the Enlightenment:
"A thing is not proved just because no onehas ever questioned it. What has never beengone into impartially has never been properlygone into. Hence skepticism is the first steptoward truth. It must be applied generally,because it is the touchstone."
