Niccola Machiavelli (1469-1527) was an Italian statesman, often credited with being the father of political science. Here's a particularly insightful comment from one of his books:
"Men ever praise the olden time, and find fault with the present, though often without reason....Having grown old, they also laud all they remember to have seen in their youth. Theiropinion is generally erroneous.... We never know the whole truth about the past."
