I've seen some question whether Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was deserving of the lengthy tome prepared by Thomas Boswell that has since come to be the standard of biography writing. But if this quote is representative of Johnson's insight, then I say, the more the better:
"He that never compares his notions with those of others, readily acquiesces in his first thoughts, andvery seldom discovers the objections which maybe raised against his opinions; he, therefore, often thinkd himself in possession of truth, when he is only fodling an error ling since exploded."
