Here's a sobering thought from noted media critic Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980). He wrote this in 1964 in his classic work Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man and one would be hard-pressed to prove it doesn't remain true today:
"The historians and archaeologists will one day discover that the ads of our times are the richest and most faithful daily reflection that any society ever made of its entire range of activities."
Probably more true today than in 1964. Since signing up with Time-Warner for speedy internet and digital TV, my channels on TV are limited but all of them are overloaded with advertisements - hardly worth watching TV any more. No Roger Ramjets or Commander Toms around these days. Mom
