Here's a great line from a true American hero, Cesar Chavez (1927-1993), who understood something of the connection between one's work and one's dignity:

“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and
forget about progress and prosperity for our
community... Our ambitions must be broad
enough to include the aspirations and needs
of others, for their sakes and for our own.”
