Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was one of the most prominent American authors of the period before the Civil War. Here's something he wrote that is worth remembering:
"Happiness in this world, when it comes,comes incidentally. Make it the object ofpursuit, and it leads us a wild-goose chase,and is never attained. Follow some otherobject, and very possibly we may findthat we have caught happinesswithout dreaming of it."
