Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was something of a man about town (the town being London) and bon vivant (at least according to his biographer Thomas Boswell). But he was also a man of letters, and this quote is suggestive of his more thoughtful side:
"A wise man will make haste to forgive, because he knows the true value of time, and will not suffer it to pass away in unnecessary pain."
