I tend to think that H.L. Mencken (1880-1956) generally expressed a clear-eyed view of reality, though it often came across as acerbic or pessimistic. You'll see what I mean from this statement:
"It is inaccurate to say that I hate everything. I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency. This makes me forever ineligible for public office."
