Here's a rather heavy idea, courtesy of German philosopher Theodor Adorno ( 1903-1969), who generally tended towards a pessimistic outlook on things. It's still worth thinking about, though:
"That all men are alike is exactly what societywould like to hear. It considers actual or imagineddifferences as stigmas indicating that not enoughhas yet been done; that something has still beenleft outside its machinery, not quite determinedby its totality."
