I think that Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) made this comment in relation to owning slaves back in the 1850s, but it certainly applies to other situations as well:

"The possession of arbitrary power has always,
the world over, tended irresistibly to destroy
humane sensibility, magnanimity, and truth."
