Friday Philosophy

I kind of like this semtiment, expressed by the French philosopher Charles de Montesquieu (1689-1755), one of the figures closely associated with the enlightenment:

"If only we wanted to be happy, it would be easy;
but we want to be happier than other people,
which is difficult, since we think them
happier than they are."
